Sage Hill Adolescent and Kids' Program (SHAnKs')

SHAnKs - because children and teenagers care too! SHAnKs' provides social and recreational fun activity for kids.

FAQ's

What do we do and when to we do it?

The program provides a combination of day activities, day trips and camps with a focus on having fun in a safe, friendly and relaxed environment. Our regular get togethers are one Sunday a month.

In addition to the regular program scheduling SHAnKs also provides some activities during school holidays in partnership with the local Commonwealth Carer Respite Centre. This is done through the provision of passes to local activities including but not limited to the cinema, swimming pools and mini-golf. You can find out about all of the upcoming activities and events in the monthly newsletter.

The SHAnKs' program is open allowing participants (young carers) to come and go as they like, it is not intended for it to be a priority in a young carer's life, but an adjunct to their social activities.

Who can participate in the SHAnKs' program?

The SHAnKs program provides an opportunity for mutual support, social activities and respite for young people 6-16 years of age, who have a family member with a mental health issue/disability. The group includes a diverse range of families from both town and country regions across the Southwest and represents a broad cultural mix, including families from indigenous backgrounds.

So how much does all this fun cost?

There is no cost to families or kids accessing SHAnKs.

So if it doesn't cost us anything, how we do all these great things?

Funding has come from a variety of services and groups.

So what exciting things have you done in the past?

  • In 2011 and 2012 three groups of young carers, parents, volunteers and staff attended Roar 'n' Snore at Melbourne Zoo.
  • Several young carers attended the 2009 Children of Parents with a Mental Illness (COPMI) conference in Adelaide
  • At the THeMHS Conference 2007, five young carers were interviewed by Andrew Denton for an episode of Enough Rope. (Angels and Demons)
