School Mental Health Education Program

Aspire Schools Mental Health Education Program commenced in 1998 building on the framework of the then Mental Illness Education Australia Program which was developed by ARAFMI - NSW in the late 1980's.

Aspire is a key partner of a national alliance of school education program providers. Other members of the alliance include MIEACT in Canberra, the BlackDog Institute in New South Wales, ARAFAMI in Western Australia and MIEA Queensland
The Program is delivered to secondary college students from year nine upwards across the Southwest to raise awareness of mental health problems and mental illness. The program is unique in that each presentation includes a personal story from one of our trained volunteer community mental health educators, all of whom have a lived experience of mental illness.

The aims of the Program are:

  • To improve understanding of mental illness particularly among young people in schools
  • To dispel the myths and stigma surrounding mental illness
  • To provide information about mental illness
  • To advise of available supports and information networks in the community related to mental illness

Each presentation includes:

  • Information about mental illness and mental health and wellbeing
  • Information about major mental illnesses
  • Facts and statistics
  • Defines mental health and how to maintain it
  • A stimulating discussion about personal mental health and coping strategies
  • Personal experiences and insights of living with a mental illness
