Understanding Mental Health and Wellbeing

An introduction to mental health, mental health promotion, prevention of ill-health and early intervention.

‘Understanding Mental Health and Wellbeing: An introduction to mental health, mental health promotion, prevention of mental ill-health and early intervention' was developed by Auseinet * (The Australian Network for Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention for Mental Health) as part of its national workforce development program in 2008.

Aspire has two trained and accredited facilitators who regularly deliver this training module across Southwest Victoria.

The aim of the module is to clarify and articulate the conceptual underpinnings of mental health promotion, prevention of mental ill-health and early intervention and their relevance to a range of settings and sectors.

The purpose of the module is two-fold:

• To improve knowledge and understanding of the principles of promotion, prevention and early intervention and their application across sectors.

• To develop a shared understanding of the concepts across sectors.

The module is not intended to be skills based. The focus is primarily on enhancing knowledge and raising awareness of the benefits of taking a promotion and prevention
approach across a range of sectors.

The content of the module covers:

• Concepts of positive mental health
• Influences on mental health (including social determinants and risk and protective factors)
• Key health promotion frameworks relevant to mental health including the Ottawa Charter
• Spectrum of Interventions and overview of different prevention interventions
• Overview of early intervention
• Benefits of investing in promotion and prevention
• Status of the evidence
• Examples of evidence-based interventions.

The module has been developed for people working in government and non-government organisations and clinical, non-clinical, health, non-health, rural and urban
settings.

The scope of content is relevant for managers, team leaders, clinicians, service providers, project officers and policymakers who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of the relevance of promotion and prevention approaches for mental health. The module has been developed as a 4 or 6 hour training package.

Some of the sectors and workforces the module has already been delivered to include: health, mental health, health promotion, education, welfare, employment, disability, youth workers, TAFE and university students.

*Auseinet was a national initiative located at Flinders University in South Australia and funded by the Australian Government, Department of Health and Ageing which unfortunately ceased operations in November 2009.
