Mental Health Promotion and Community Education

Aspires' commitment to the delivery of mental health promotion and community education programs stems from Southwest Victorian research conducted in the early/mid 1990's that showed a mental health service in a rural environment must have a role in changing community attitudes and educating service providers to be effective.

Aspires' commitment to mental health Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention (PPEI) investment is informed and underpinned by the four Australian Federal Governments National Mental Health Plans since 1992 (1993-1998, 1998-2003, 2003-2008 and 2009-2014), National Action Plan for Promotion, Prevention and Early Intervention for Mental Health 1999 and 2000, the Victorian Governments Mental Health Reform Strategy 2009-2019 - "Because mental health matters" and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundations - A Plan for Action 2005-2007: Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing.

To meet expressed and identified community needs Aspire provides a diverse range of education and training programs across the Southwest Victorian region.
This includes professional development programs for those who deliver services to people who have a mental illness or who may be at risk of becoming ill.
Training programs are for people who work in the helping professions, or who work in community service organisations, to improve their skills and their understanding of the mental illnesses.
We provide a range of programs to increase the level of understanding of mental illnesses in the community to reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses and to encourage individuals to seek help if they experience social or emotional distress.

For more information on any of the Mental Health Promotion and Community Education programs please contact the Health Promotion and Education Manager at the Warrnambool office between 9-5 Monday to Friday.
